What is it about the Scandies? They have a bit of a habit of knocking out great, dance music orientated artists, that just rock. We’ve had Röyksopp, Robyn and, Peter, Bjorn and John to name but a few and now we have Miike Snow. Also, a very good friend of mine was a pop star in Finland too but I won’t name them for fear of retribution.
Anyway, some trivia for you, Miike Snow isn’t a person, they’re a band. And none of them are called Miike (or Mike), or Snow. They called themselves that to take the Michael (ok, bad joke) out of band names. The name is actually a good friend of theirs (Mike Snow) but they spelt it Miike after a Japanese file director.
Anyway, they are three chaps : Andrew Wyatt, Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnber. Andrew is the singer/song writer and the other two are famous producers who have worked with the likes of Madonna and Britney. Indeed, they won a Grammy for recording Britney Spears “Toxic”, but don’t let that put you off 🙂
So basically, this is like a trippy dance album with plenty of vocals. We’re talking about music that is very listenable rather than jump out stuff. The best way I can describe Andrew’s voice is he reminds me of Rob Dougan (of “Clubbed to Death” fame) mixed with some clever beats and, plenty of electro and the occasional bit of soul.
The album wanders from some pretty chilled out vocals through to some pretty energetic, motivating track and of course, with the heritage of Christian and Pontus, everything is excellently produced.
A couple of key tracks from the album:
- Silvia
- Black & Blue
- A Horse is not a Home
- In Search Of
All 4 are the more lively tracks but take a listen and I think you will see.
I think we’re going to hear a lot from Miike Snow and I can’t wait. there is some serious talent here of the league of (dare I say it) Daft Punk.
So my friend Andy said I should give these reviews some sort of score, like out of 10. That would be boring so I’m going to give each album a G-Score… 0 being rubbish and 4 being the best (Why 4? Ask my Bro).
“Mike Snow” by “Miike Snow” gets 4G’s
GGGG
